Many plastics can degrade when in the processing condition and this instability can be accelerated by the presence of moisture or oxygen. To test these materials it is usually necessary to thoroughly dry the sample before introduction into the rheometer and then carry out the test in an inert, dry environment.
To generate a suitable environment, the nitrogen purge option utilizes a controlled stream of dry nitrogen gas, which is fed through a manifold into the rheometer's test area. This saturates the area above the bores of the barrel and prevents degradation of the test sample.
